Description:
A gifted guitarist who has played with Norah Jones and John Cowherd, this is a remarkable work on a classic by Carla Bley! After moving to New York, he joined Paul Motian's electric bebop band on the recommendation of Pat Metheny and Wolfgang Moospiel. In recent years, he has also played impressively with John Cowherd's "Mercy Project". He has played with many brilliant musicians such as Norah Jones, Brian Blade, Steve Swallow, Joey Barron, and Candace Springs, and his last album, "Blue Has a Range," released in 2020, was the first time he used keyboard instruments (John Cowherd) on a leader album. Blue Has a Range" was released in 2020. For this new album, "Healing Power," the trio returns to a piano-less configuration and joins bassist Ben Allison, who has made numerous recordings with the group, and saxophonist and clarinetist Ted Nash, known for his work with the Wynton Marsalis-led Jazz Orchestra at Lincoln Center. The trio is a collaboration of Ben Allison and Ted Nash.It will take you to an even more fantastic and imaginative sound world. All of the pieces are originals by acclaimed composer/pianist Carla Bray (b. 1936). Cardenas has played with Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, of which Carla was musical director, and with Carla's partner Steve Swallow's band, and working on a collection of Carla's works has been a longtime dream of his. The trio with Allison and Nash has also performed since its inception in 2011, tackling music by Jim Hall and Leonard Bernstein. In June 2021, when the Corona disaster was beginning to settle in, the three came together after a long absence and shed their unique light on some of Carla Bley's best-known songs, including M1 "Ida Lupino," M5 "Lawns," and M7 "Olhos De Gato. Although the Cardenas-Allison-Nash trio has already released two albums on other labels, this is their first release on Sunnyside. Many of the numbers, which have been performed masterfully not only by Carla herself but also by her former husband Paul Bray, as well as by Steve Keune, Aki Takase, Walter Lang, and many other pianists, have been given a new look with a piano-less instrumentation. The use of landscape photographs taken by Ben Allison on the front, inside, and outside of the jacket will also be a topic of discussion.
